Cinema: A Single Man

Let’s take a time-machine and go back to the awesome sixties, with this beautiful film about the homosexual English professor George. In A Single Man (Tom Fords directorial debut) Ford tells us the story about a man who lost the love of his live and has great difficulty with moving on. I will not reveal too much, but I’ve also read the book (which I loved) and all I can say is that Ford does not disappoint us at all. It’s a perfect rendition of the book. And have I mentioned that it is beautiful? I dare say that, after Lost in Translation, this is probably my favorite film EVER.

Why, you ask? What’s so special about this film? Well, here are 3 very good reasons why you should go and watch it:

Gotta love those bulletpoints

♥ Happy twenty-13 everyone! Let me break out another cliché on this already cliché blog: I can’t believe 2012 is really over. It went by so fast! Last year around this time I was just leaving for Sweden and I couldn’t even imagine how amazing the year was going to be.
♥ My christmas was perfect. Lots of good food and quality time with family members. How was yours?
♥ I hate to be repetitive, but I have been working a lot lately. I had to work the day before christmas and I swear, I must’ve giftwrapped at least a hundred gifts that day! It was fun though. People were in a good mood and although my fingers were sore from all the wrapping, I had fun with my colleagues.
♥ As you’ve probably already had guessed, blogging wasn’t really that big of a priority for me the past few weeks. Busy times! I also get bored really easily with just writing about my own life. Not that it is actually boring of courssseee…. but I’m no freaking Michelle Obama or anything, let’s just be honest! And those instagram diaries aren’t doing me any favors either. Oh, I ate another pie? I wore another outfit? I posed for another picture? Snoozefest. Unfortunately I had very little to no inspiration to write about anything else. Must work on that.
♥ I’m thinking about buying a drawing tablet, something like this. Does anyone of you have any idea about which one I should get? I read a lot of good stuff about Wacom, but I have literally zero experience with this kind of stuff. Please let me know!
♥ If you aren’t watching The Office yet, you totally should. It took me a while to get into it, but now we probably watch two or three episodes a day. They are only twenty minutes, so they are perfect to watch during breakfast or before going to bed (if you aren’t doing anything else, wink wink). Anyway, Jim and Pam are SO cute!
♥ The Twilight movies are bad, but I’m kind of obsessing about the soundtrack from the first movie. LOVE this song. It’s so bad that it’s good. Something like that. (Also, my favorite parts from Breaking Dawn II were all the pretty Volvo scenes. Now I want a Volvo too! My boyfriend is totally gloating when he’s reading this. Somehow his indoctrination about the “amazing Volvo” finally got stuck inside my head.. hehe)
♥ My sister introduced me to One Tree Hill a few weeks ago. Big mistake. Don’t watch it. It’s awful… and very addictive!
♥ I finished Albright’s autobiography (such a great read!) and am now looking for something along the same lines. Someone told me Clinton’s autobiography is pretty good, but I don’t know… it probably covers pretty much the same international conflicts. Nerds, let me hear you roar! Whose autobiography can you recommend to me?
♥ With the risk of sounding like a hipster: I love the Smiths. When we drove to my family down south for Christmas, we blasted this album through our carspeakers. Morrissey and his crazy lyrics… Love love love. Fortunately I’m blessed with a boyfriend who likes them too ;-)
♥ For the other one (or two) Silent Witness fans out there: the first episode of season 16 airs tomorrow! Yay! Just giving you the heads up ;)

Ok folks, that’s it for today. Hope you are all doing well :-) Hugs from me! xx

My inner-Gandalf voice was bothering me again, so here I am

What? It’s december already? I don’t want to go all “Days of Our Lives” on you, but damn, life really is like sand in an hourglass. Time flies (when you’re busy making other plans, while you’re having fun, yadaya…).

Pictured: Me, trying to smize like Tyra, our couch with some new cushions, reading Vogue on my day off, drinking latte’s, wearing my big brown “heart” sweater, posing in front of a mirror without a reason, a picture of Nathalie’s very cute apartment in the centre of Amsterdam (I LOVE IT), reading books like a boss, eating apple pie, showing of my ticket to Breaking Dawn, sort of accidently stumbling upon a press-event for Oodlz (long story… but jummy food!) & the last picture is me again, trying to pose in front of the mess I call my wardrobe.

Not pictured, but also done this week: I decorated a christmass tree with my sister (all while singing along with christmas songs, yay), played Rumikub with my mom and her boyfriend, saw a lot of episodes of the Office, made almost 30 hours at work this week and wrapped a lot of gifts (part of the job), my dad came to visit us on wednesday, we discovered that Ikea served their delicious cappuccino-cake again (so we biked all the way over there, just to eat cake – ilovemyboyfriend), I drank a lot of coffee and in between I tried to take “real” pictures (I failed, obviously).

Life lesson of the week:

Get bitten by a vampire, because then you will instantly become a real VILF and seriously, who wouldn’t want that, right?!1

Show 1 footnote

  1. I wish I’d thought of this myself, but thank you, guy sitting next to me during Breaking Dawn, for sharing this trivial information with me. Also, the fact that you were checking your watch every five minutes wasn’t annoying at all.

About being invested in fictional ~love~

In this post I shall open up about my embarrassing investment in fictional couples and discuss this concept a bit further, so if:

a) you are a sane person (or)
b) you want to be able to still think of ME as a sane person

you should probably skip this post (here are some cute kittens for you to look at). If you’ve decided to read on: welcome. Now, let’s talk.

It all started when a disturbing piece of news reached my delicate ears: one of the male lead-characters in one of my favorite British detectives decided to leave the show and do something less productive with his life (I’ll admit I’m a bit biased, but come on). Yes, I’m talking about Tom Ward a.k.a “heartthrob Harry” Cunningham of the hit-show Silent Witness. For more than ten years he played this character and for five of them, the writers built up a storyline around him and the female-lead Nikki. Of course the show was not about them, but eh, for me it kind of was. And now he is just gone. All this without even shooting a final episode! I’ve already lost my reputation by referencing a Celine Dion song in one of my previous posts, so I’ll just go ahead and say it: I’m sad! FIVE YEARS PEOPLE. And we did not even get a kiss! Sigh.

I realise I’m probably a bit more invested in this fictional relationship than I should. Maybe it means my mother dropped me on the head when I was a baby or that I shouldn’t have been allowed to watch soap operas as a kid. But is it wrong? Fact is, getting invested in fictional relationships is one of my many guilty pleasures. I did it with Ron and Hermione, I cried when Jim & Pam FINALLY got married (Jim looking into the camera just after they got married on the boat – TEARS ALL OVER), I’m still rooting for Chuck and Blair, I pined for Bob and Charlotte and I really wanted Luke and Lorelai to be together. Why do I “invest” in these relationships? Because it is fun! One problem though, is that it’s only fun for as long as it lasts. When an actor decides to leave a show or when a book comes to an end, the stories are gone and you’re the one left with all the feelings you “invested”.

Fortunately for “us people”, there is something like the internet! After finding out about Harry and doing a quick google-session, I came to the conclusion that I’m not the only one with these kind of feelings. If you have a favorite pairing, just try searching them on youtube. Chances are there is a video out there with a compilation of their “best moments”, all accompanied by a very dramatic soundtrack (turns out “Far Away” by Nickelback is a favorite of many and most of Miley Cyrus’ songs are PERFECT for this). Watch and marvel! Apparantly there are even people who decide to write (or rewrite) about their favorite fictional couples themselves. Thousands of stories about this magical world, all written by fans. I’ll admit I once spent a whole afternoon reading a Harry Potter fanfiction about Draco and Hermoine, which was suprisingly good (and perfectly PG13)! Because I should note that I DO draw the line at weird fanfiction or drawings. No disturbing sex scenes s’il vous plaît! If I wanted that I would just buy 30 shades of grey. I’m weird, but not THAT weird. (Yes, that does exist, my innocent grashopper. After all, it’s still the internet. If you want nightmares, take a look at this.) (hey, I warned you)

Oh well. I’ll probably miss my favorite couple when the new season of Silent Witness starts and yes, I’ll be a bit sad and therefore will replay this youtube video a few times, but I’ll be fine. As long as I don’t cry myself to sleep over it every night, I don’t consider it to be an unhealthy thing nor a “wrong investment”. It may suprise you after reading this post, but I am realistic enough to acknowledge my loss and move on ;-) (eventually)

Did your mother drop you as a baby? I.e. do you have a fictional couple in which you “invest”?

You taketh a sister, a camera and an outfit (sort of) and this is what you get.

If I had to describe my personal style, I would use the words simple, comfortable and eehhh affordable (I also try to always look classy, but that’s more of a goal than something I actually achieve I guess). I like browsing fashionblogs for inspiration, but most of the time the girls are wearing stuff which make me feel like a slob for not wanting to go around in 9 inch heels everyday. And I’m sorry, but I just don’t have the money for a designerbag. I have to eat! If you do have the money and perseverance to walk around like that, I applaud you, but for me it’s just not an option. I like to be comfy and I love my food.

That’s why I really love this outfit! I have been recycling it for the past two weeks (everytime with a different dress or skirt/sweater combo) and I’m still not getting bored with it. I’m actually wearing a summer dress (H&M) with a simple black sweater on top of it (Primark/Penny’s). My thights are just regular ones, and my ankle boots… they are D I V I N E (and only 25 euros at a dutch store called Van Haren). I wear them with almost everything! My coat is also from H&M, I picked it up during the autumn sale last year. It’s a bit too chilly to wear in real winter cold, but perfect for this transitioning-period into fall.

All in all, it is a super simple (affordable) outfit, and also super comfi! I can’t guarantee you that you won’t be stopped by Trinny and Susannah, but I think it’s perfect for a day of shopping (I actually bribed my sister with coffee and cake to take these pictures of me during a shoppingtrip, here is the proof:)

I also think that you could also easily wear it to go to class (although I would probably pick a different skirt/dress, but to each it’s own of course). Hell, you could probably even go dancing in it! And yes, it is a bit dark (black black black!), but that doesn’t bother me at all. Just wear your hair down, maybe add some lipstick and you are good to go :-)

You may wonder: why share? It isn’t that fabulous, does this really need a post of it’s own? Well, I for one LOVE seeing what other people are wearing, especially if it’s something that is very easy to copy. And of course I don’t know if this is something you WANT to copy, but I sure do know it is easy ;-)

Not about Celine Dion. Well, maybe a little bit.

As part of a project (read: expanding our “wall of fame” as well as finally adding some pages to our photoalbum) I’ve been browsing through all the pictures I made while I was abroad. Between all the new schoolstuff and my new job, I’ve hardly had the time to REALLY miss my stay in Sweden. With this project it’s hard to ignore. I don’t want to go all “Celine Dion” on you, but let’s just say that “it’s all coming back to me now” (I may or may not own a cd with this particular song on it, and I may or may not have belted it out way too many times while listening to it in the past). (Seriously, how funny is that musicvideo though. My tears have all dried as well Celine! Now let’s all get a 90′s cut and brush it in front of a mirror while being groped from behind and practice some bad acting!).

(ok, let’s focus)

Looking back, I made a lot of beautiful memories in Sweden. I’m not only talking about the big stuff (like my trip to Lapland, picture 1), but also about the small stuff (they had delicious breakfast-cereal at my favorite swedish supermarket). I loved my exchange, I love love love Sweden and I really want to go back some day. To everyone who is thinking about going on an exchange, I want to say: do it! You will not regret it! It’s hard and not always fun (yes, I cried), but you will never forget it. You will meet interesting people, get to know yourself really well and make some great memories. I had so much fun! You should go! (Leave that Celine Dion cd at home though, you don’t want to scare your new neighbours).

If anyone of you would like to see some more pictures I took during my 6 months in Sweden, let me know :-)
